Pierre Jahan French, 1909-2003
Feux d'artifices, 1951
Photogramme
35,5 x 28 cm
One of only a few proofs ever developped by the artist.
Photogramme tiré par l'artiste, signed with the studio stamp, titled and dated "Juillet 1951" on the back.
The photogram is a technique of camera-less photography known and used since the late 19th century, mainly for scientific photography. In it, on the photo-sensitive sheet an real-life object is applied, then exposed to the light. It is however during the early 1920s century that pioneers of avant-garde photography, such Christian Schad, Moholy-Nagy and Man ray will use it to great aesthetic effect.
In a display of technical mastery, Pierre Jahan combines an image of fireworks for the 14 Julliet with photogrammed feathers, to create a quasi-abstract composition.
