Picasso stafted creating ceramics in the Post-War period, after a trip at Vallauris in the South of France with Françoise Gilot. There he met Suzanne Ramié, who headed the Madoura studio at Vallauris. Picasso started modelling small ceramic figures, and rediscovered in them the joy of creating.
Starting from 1947 to just before his death in 1971, Picasso will continue to create ceramic pieces. For his plates, he developped a specific procedure - he would create "ceramic engravings", making an original matrix that will serve to "stamp" the model in relief on the ceramics themselves (cf-Georges BLOCH, Catalogue de l'oeuvre céramique gravé). The works would then proceed to be hand-painted. Created n 1949, "Quatre profils enlacés" is one of the early Picasso ceramic editions.
